A clip from a comedian's show went viral this week where an audience member made a cheap remark on how he is entitled for physical favours from his date because he paid 370 for the biryani.

The guy laughed, the comedian laughed, the entire audience laughed. Nobody found an issue with the joke. The clip wasn't viral initially because people were offended.It spread because people found it funny. The guy got fired from his job, the comedian faced backlash and deactivated his IG. But that doesn't solve the problem, does it? The whole damn auditorium found it funny. This isn't the mindset of that one guy.

If an entire room laughs instantly and nobody pauses, it can feel like the joke tapped into something socially familiar rather than obviously unacceptable. Indian society has normalised females getting catcalled, Bollywood normalised being creepy and stalking as being romantic, a lot of men in India stare at females as if they have never seen one.

You post about a man staring at you even with video proof online, you would get "oh, you're doing it for attention". They shamelessly stare, molest and sexually assault because they know there are no consequences. The problem isn't one guy from the audience, the comedian or the entire audience. The root cause of the problem is our society which has been reflected in his show.

A joke becomes dangerous when people stop questioning it and start applauding it.

The men who would laugh at these jokes behind closed doors might be posting against this incident on Instagram. What would actually solve this is when men stand up against their friends and colleagues passing these cheap remarks behind closed doors, when we stand up against a creep staring at a female in a public place, when you call out these incidents every time so that it never becomes normalised.
